Playa Del Carmen Mexico Travel

Playa del Carmen, the third largest city in the state of Quintana Roo, is located along the beautiful coast of the Caribbean Sea on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. About 45 minutes south from Cancun, it is the heart of the Maya Riviera. The area is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, lush jungles, and amazing adventures. Tourism for Playa del Carmen was not something that immediately happened, matter of fact, the tourism boom happened quite by accident; vacationers stopped in Playa del Carmen to catch a ferry to Cozumel, soon they noticed the tranquility of the little town paired with the great beaches was something that could not be found in Cancun, thus introduced tourism to Playa del Carmen.

The people of Playa del Carmen didn’t want tourism to take over the little town, they wanted to keep it quaint, but something the vacationers would continue to enjoy, so they issued a mandate stating that no building should be built over three stories high; while there are a few four story buildings in town, they were built before the mandate was issued, and Playa del Carmen has kept true to being a Caribbean hide-a-way. Situated on Highway 307 in the center of the Maya Riviera and along the Caribbean coast, Playa del Carmen is within close proximity to a number of activities, including scuba diving, cenote diving, Mayan archeological sites, and themed parks. The streets of Playa del Carmen are divided into two different types, the ones that run parallel to the beach are called Avenidas or Avenues and are numbered in increments of 5, the ones that run perpendicular to the beach are called Calles or Streets, north of Avenida Juarez are even numbers, south of Avenida Juarez are odd numbers. The main drag of Playa del Carmen called Quinta Avenida or 5th Avenue, is just one block from the beach; the cobble stone lined path, spans a total of 20 blocks and is specifically for pedestrians, except in the early morning hours when all the shops, restaurants, and businesses get their deliveries.

There are a couple of ways to get to Playa del Carmen, you choose to either fly into Cancun and then take a bus, rent a car, or use a one-way transfer service to get to the town. You can also fly into the international airport on Cozumel, then either take a hopper plane or take a ferry ride into Playa del Carmen. One thing to be mindful of when you arrive in Mexico is Customs; for most, it is luck of the draw, you either will be able to walk right through customs or you will have your bags inspected, many don’t have to worry about this until the return to the states, when the chances of being caught with Cuban cigars or tequila is higher. When you get into Mexico, you may want to change some of your US dollars into Pesos, since purchasing some things like your transportation fares will be cheaper.
